Winners of the Kay Lie Excellence in MIS and Ted Morgan Excellence in Vaginal Surgery Awards

On June 5, 2019, the Sunnybrook Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) Division and Urogynecology Division presented three residents with awards. Dr. Brenna Swift was the recipient of the Kay Lie Excellence in MIS Surgery Award, and Drs. Humara Edell and Melissa Walker were the recipients of the Ted Morgan Excellence in Vaginal Surgery Award.

In 2018, the MIS/Urogynecology group at Sunnybrook decided to honor two mentors who have had profound influence on our careers and for patients. We named the awards after them.

Dr. Kay Lie has been instrumental in establishing the MIS/Urogynecology Program at the University of Toronto. He was the first to perform laparoscopic salpingectomies and encouraged the development of Minimally Invasive Surgery in Gynecology. Over the last 20 years, he has trained countless number of residents and fellows to perform laparoscopic ovarian cystectomies and hysterectomies. The Kay Lie Award was established to recognize a senior resident whom the Sunnybrook MIS Division feels has the most potential for MIS surgery and their care for patients emulates the excellent care that Dr. Lie provided to his patients. The winner this year, Dr. Brenna Swift (PGY5), is planning on pursuing a fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology.

Dr. Edwin (Ted) Morgan is considered to be the grandfather of urogynecology in Canada. Over 40+ years, he tirelessly trained many residents and clinical fellows in the art of vaginal surgery and transformed the lives of many patients who suffered from urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. The Dr Ted Morgan Award was established to recognize a senior resident whom the Sunnybrook Urogynecology Division feels has the most potential for vaginal surgery and their care for patients emulates the excellent care that Dr. Morgan provided to his patients. There was a tie this year… the winners are: Dr. Humara Edell (PGY4) and Dr. Melissa Walker (PGY5)!

Our winners in 2018:

Dr. Kay Lie Excellence in MIS Surgery Award:
